$135,000 in Grants to Artists

Featured Public Projects Grants

New for 2016, ArtPrize Featured Public Projects presented an opportunity for large, ambitious public art entries to take residence at four highly visible public sites in downtown Grand Rapids during ArtPrize 2016. Grants ranging from $10,000 to $15,000 per project were awarded to directly support artists.

The grants, presented by the Frey Foundation, were awarded to DeWitt Godfrey, Christopher Schardt, W/Field Workshop and FriendsWithYou.

Pitch Night Grants

For its fourth consecutive year, ArtPrize Pitch Night returned and expanded to award four artists $5,000 and the chance to exhibit their work in a high-profile downtown venue. ArtPrize partnered with 21c Museum Hotels and Delta Air Lines to put on events in Minneapolis, Indianapolis, Durham and Louisville.

The grants were awarded to Emily Lynch Victory, Kipp Normand, Stacey Kirby and Leticia Bajuyo. Stacey Kirby went on to win the $200,000 Juried Grand Prize for her Pitch Night-winning performative installation.

Artist Seed Grants

Launched in 2014 with the support of the Frey Foundation, ArtPrize Artist Seed Grants award 25 artists $2,000 each to fund their ambitious and challenging ArtPrize entries. The winning artists were selected by the ArtPrize Arts Advisory Council based on both financial need and artistic merit.

CrowdRise Matching Grant Challenge

New this year, the CrowdRise Matching Grant Challenge presented by the Michigan Lottery offered an additional opportunity for all connected artists to raise financial support for their entries. Ten $1,000 matching grants were awarded to the first ten artists who reached $1,000 from at least ten unique donors in their own CrowdRise.com crowdsourcing campaigns. Participating artists were able to collectively raise over $27,000.
