Featured Public Projects Grants

Returning for a second year, ArtPrize Featured Public Projects presented an opportunity for large, ambitious public art entries. The program expanded in 2017 from four projects to nine - including four muralists who applied their creations to shipping containers during Preview Week. Each project took residence at visible public sites in Grand Rapids during ArtPrize Nine. A total of $85,000 in grants was awarded through this program.

Artist Seed Grants

Launched in 2014 with the support of the Frey Foundation, ArtPrize Artist Seed Grants award 25 artists $2,000 each to fund their ambitious and challenging ArtPrize entries. The winning artists were selected by the ArtPrize Arts Advisory Council based on both financial need and artistic merit.

Pitch Night Grants

For its fifth consecutive year, ArtPrize Pitch Night returned and expanded to award six artists $5,000 each, and the opportunity to exhibit their work in a high-profile downtown venue. ArtPrize partnered with 21c Museum Hotels, Delta Air Lines and Experience Grand Rapids to put on events in Louisville, Durham, Bentonville, Detroit, New Orleans and Indianapolis.

The grants were awarded to:

Rena Detrixhe went on to win both the public vote and juried Time-Based Category Awards, a total of $25,000, for her Red Dirt Rug Monument. Pippin Frisbie Calder’s work, Cancelled Edition, also captured the attention of the public, becoming a public vote finalist in the Installation Category.

GoFundMe Matching Grant Challenge

Returning for a second year, the GoFundMe Matching Grant Challenge presented by the Michigan Lottery offered an additional opportunity for all connected artists to raise financial support for their entries. Ten $1,000 matching grants were awarded to the first ten artists who reached $1,000 from at least ten unique donors in their own GoFundMe crowdsourcing campaigns. Participating artists were able to collectively raise over $25,000.
