BLUE BRIDGE MUSIC FESTIVAL
For the second year in a row, the HopCat WYCE Blue Bridge Music Festival brought the magic of live performance to the ArtPrize night scene. Organizer Quinn Matthews, WYCE Station Manager and host of GRLive, set the stage for visitors to enjoy live music on the city’s iconic Blue Bridge for two epic days and nights. Participating musicians included the Michigander, Yolanda Lavender, Jesse Ray & The Carolina Catfish, and more. Each band included their ArtPrize entry song in their set, and the inaugural WYCE ArtPrize Song of the Year, a $1,000 prize, went to The Great Ones for ‘Do it 4 the Love.’
ARTPRIZE ON SCREEN
ArtPrize On Screen, presented by the Michigan Film & Digital Media Office and produced by Celebration! Cinema, returned for another year with 13 new narrative, documentary and short films. Screenings of new and independent cinema, each preceded by a Michigan-made short film curated by the UICA’s Open Projector Night Series, included Sundance favorite DINA, Ai Weiwei’s HUMAN FLOW, Ken Burn’s THE VIETNAM WAR, and others. Programming ran from September 20–23 at the historic Ladies’ Literary Club, next door to the ArtPrize HUB/HQ, and at Celebration! Cinema North.
ArtPrize lovers watched the 2017 ArtPrize Awards Ceremony, powered by the DTE Energy Foundation, live on WOOD TV8 and at Rosa Parks Circle. Viewers of the two-time Emmy Award-nominated show experienced surprise performances by local talent; juror reflections on their selected winners; artist acceptance speeches; appearances by Grand Rapids Mayor Rosalynn Bliss, ArtPrize leadership and community leaders; and a look back at the ninth annual event, with a distinctly comedic flair.
ARTPRIZE AFTER DARK
Immediately following the announcement of the $200,000 Public Vote and Juried Grand Prize winners at the ArtPrize Awards, the floor at 20 Monroe Live transformed from a TV studio-style audience, clearing the floor for “ArtPrize After Dark,” presented by LIFEWTR, a premium bottled water that fuses creativity and design. Detroit-based band ONEFREQ kicked off the evening with a soulful set, followed immediately by headlining artist, Maségo.
